The project was designed based on a competitive call for proposals from a regional environmental fund established under the Tulum Declaration, which supports and finances activities related to the Mesoamerican Reef System: the MAR Fund. The RRA-MAR was created in 2012 as a regional platform to address the degradation of the Mesoamerican Reef,
driven by the Mexican civil society organization Oceanus A.C., with support from the MAR Fund and its Reef Restoration Initiative (RRI). The RRA-MAR operates in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras and is designed to strengthen local capacities, technical exchange, and transboundary collaboration.
The assessment of the RRA-MAR aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the Network’s operations; identify challenges, gaps, and priority areas for strengthening; formulate strategic and actionable recommendations; and guide a participatory process with national nodes and the RRA-MAR Executive Committee. The final draft of the assessment was presented in November 2025 to the Executive Committee and MAR Fund, with the final version scheduled for delivery in January 2026.
