Development of Minimum Criteria for the Biodiversity Objective of Mexico’s Sustainable Taxonomy

The project involved identifying the minimum technical elements for the construction of the Biodiversity Objective within Mexico’s Sustainable Taxonomy (TSM).

The team reviewed international best practices, frameworks, principles, and guidelines regarding environmental, social, and sustainability finance, such as green and environmental taxonomies, sovereign thematic bond frameworks, and international directives. International experiences were analyzed to identify best practices in the development of biodiversity metrics, thresholds, technical criteria, economic activities,

and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to establish the fundamental technical elements.

Furthermore, the project included a stakeholder engagement process. This involved stakeholder mapping, including financial institutions, academic bodies, NGOs, and policymakers. A virtual workshop and an online questionnaire were organized to gather feedback, aiming to socialize the technical elements and collect input from the Sustainable Taxonomy Working Group and other relevant stakeholders.

Finally, Planisphera categorized stakeholder feedback based on strategic importance and feasibility. Additional research was conducted to produce the final report, which included a detailed proposal for biodiversity criteria, as well as recommendations on developing appropriate financial instruments to mobilize resources toward nature-based solutions that align economic activities with sustainability and nature-positive investments.
